Communications faculty are preparing for a new venture in online education.

Departmental faculty are preparing for a new university venture in online education this summer. Professor Terrence Ross, working with Laura Martin, special assistant to the provost for distance learning, chairs the Faculty Senate Task Force aimed at bringing various online courses to the campus this summer. The university pilot program is in response to a national movement that has increasingly looked to the digital world to expanding its course offerings. “These online course are being designed to capitalize on the advantages of online learning,” says Ross.

Ross’s task force has been discussing the merits of such a program and the parameters of the summer curriculum. The program is not without its critics, who are concerned about the effectiveness of such nontraditional learning. The university has encouraged the exploration of online courses by offering stipends to professors whose courses are selected for the pilot.

Professor Mark Grabowski was among those selected and his course, Internet Law, will be among a host of online courses given this summer.  Grabowski, who holds a law degree, teaches web journalism and media law in the communications department.
